One side-effect of around a decade of using mirrorless cameras: the loud “clank” of an SLR camera shutter, digital or not, now annoys me a lot.

It's all about being intentional...

Usually I’m wary about advice from photography YouTubers, as often it’s either repurposing basic ideas or just silly, I think I’ve came across more YouTubers telling pros saying the only way to shoot is fully manual than pros that actually do that. But this one from Tom Calton kind of resonated with me, even with the silly stock footage that keeps appearing.

Taking lots of photos, by itself, doesn’t necessarily helps you improve. It’s more complex than that. Going out on a photo walk is basically collecting pictures. Obliviously this video resonates with me because in the last few months I’ve been in a very intense feedback loop, but also because I was already aware that me taking photos that end up in a pile wasn’t helping me improve.

It’s all about being intentional, understanding what you want and don’t want to shoot, being deliberate and not just casual. And for that getting feedback is crucial, but first and foremost actually looking to the work and being able to say “I need to do more of this”.

Why “Just Shoot More” Is Making You WORSE!

Hot take: “photograph only in golden hour” or “always in manual mode” are things YouTubers tell you professionals say so they can create content, but the truth is hardly any pro says that…

Yet again the internal memory of the Ricoh GR III saves the day, despite only having it for some weeks. Don’t know why we don’t have this from more manufacturers, doesn’t need to have super capacity, just enough for a few shoots when you forget the SD card.

Every once in a while I stumble upon some kind of rant regarding Adobe subscriptions prices or hidden fees. And the more I see this the more I glad I moved to darktable years ago. Yes, the UI may not be as polished and sometimes might have multiple ways to do same thing (in true open-source fashion), but I’d rather have that than feeling trapped in corporate greed. And it’s free as in free beer, but that’s really secondary.

In a world with less and less hope, losing the truly inspiring people, someone as inspiring as Jane Goodall, is particularly hard… But the work and message carries on and can still inspire us.
